The OAFA doctors Flugambulanz GmbH (short: OAFA) is an Austrian travel insurance company based in Vienna (Austria).
In 1976, the founding requirements for the OAFA medical flight ambulance were created in accordance with the statutory guidelines in Austria. The aim of the non-profit and medical-run organization was, on the one hand, to be active in prevention for foreign travelers on the one hand, and on the other hand to provide members with assistance in case of medical emergencies abroad. The indication for repatriation should in principle be independent of the foreign treatment location, taking into account that the patient has been cleared for transport abroad by the treating and responsible doctor. The OAFA group of companies with insurance, sales and assistance emerged from this organization over the years.
The organization's operations center (Assistance) can be reached by telephone 24 hours a day. Initially, for financial reasons, they did not use their own aircraft, but chartered planes from other airline companies. In the meantime, the range of aircraft and special units for airliners is so large that the company's own planes have been given back in order to charter the best possible aircraft.
The patients are looked after from bed to bed by the OAFA medical flight ambulance. Regardless of whether the patient is transported by line plane, ambulance jet or ambulance, there are up to two specialists with the patient, whose areas of expertise depend on the patient's medical history.
OAFA Versicherung AG has long been the bearer of the underwriting risk and has secured access to worldwide assistance networks through reinsurance contracts. In the meantime, the risk has been transferred in full to internationally active insurers. OAFA Ärzteflugambulanz GmbH is the sales organization that is responsible for customer advice and sales. The Austrian Air Ambulance Ärzteflugambulanz Assistenz GmbH is the 24-hour emergency organization of the OAFA.
