OPAM (Italian: Opera di Promozione dell'Alfabetizzazione nel Mondo , German Aid Organization for the Promotion of Literacy in the World ) is an international aid organization for the promotion of literacy in disadvantaged regions of the world.

The aid organization consists of an Italian branch (founded in 1972) and a branch for the German-speaking area (Germany-Austria -German-speaking Switzerland ). The latter was founded in 1980 under the name OPAM Association for the Promotion of Literacy eV based in Lindlar .

history

In 1977 pastor Josef Prinz († 2009) and development worker Hermann Bröskamp († 2012) met the Catholic clergyman Don Carlo Muratore († 2003) in Rome. He had previously lived in Venezuela for 15 years and was convinced that the best way to fight poverty was through education. On his initiative, OPAM-Italy was created in Rome in 1972.

Prinz and Bröskamp were enthusiastic about his idea and then founded the OPAM Association for the Promotion of Literacy eV in Germany in 1980 as an independent aid organization.

OPAM eV

The association is neither confessional nor politically bound. Werner Mays has been the chairman since 2009. The Union

  • For some years now, it has also been promoting microcredit projects to enable parents to earn the school fees for their children themselves.
