Esther Thyßen (born July 31, 1979 in Krefeld ) is a German ice hockey goalkeeper who has been playing for the Grefrath Lady Panthers since 2001 and was previously active between 2010 and 2013 at GSC Moers in the NRW League .

Career

Esther Thyßen began her ice hockey career at the age of eight. Since there were no girls 'teams in Grefrath at that time, she took part in the boys' training. After she was still a field player in the first year, she then switched to the goalkeeper position. At the age of 16, she trained with the men's team of Grefrather EV , which was playing in the 2nd Bundesliga at that time . She also played for the Grefrath Lady Panthers in the women's ice hockey Bundesliga . In the 1996/97 season she won the Bundesliga group north with the Lady Panthers and took third place in the final.

When the club was on the verge of bankruptcy in 1999 and many players left the club, Thyßen was accepted into the men's Bundesliga squad and helped to provide a playable team as a substitute goalkeeper for the rest of the 1999/2000 season . This made her the first woman in the German professional ice hockey game. In an away game she received 25 goals, which she commented: "The team was completely overwhelmed, I saved a lot of shots, otherwise it would have been even clearer."

With the insolvency of Grefrather EV, Grefrather EC was founded in 2001, for whose men's team it ran up in regional leagues in North Rhine-Westphalia. At the same time she continued to play for the Lady Panthers. In the following years she was also regularly active at other clubs in the area, mostly as a substitute goalkeeper for the men's teams, for example at EJ Dorsten, the Dinslaken Kobras 1b and the Canadian team Dellwig.

Since 2010 she has been a member of the men's squad of GSC Moers , for which she is active in the ice hockey regional league and the NRW league . At the same time, she continues to play for the Lady Panthers in the 2nd Bundesliga North.

Esther Thyßen initially trained as an orthopedic mechanic. From 2003 she studied biology and sport to become a teacher in Essen. She also has the Trainer B license. Today Thyßen teaches biology and sport at a grammar school in Geldern and is also active as a trainer at her home club.

International

Esther Thyßen made her debut in the women's national team at the age of 16 . At the 1999 World Cup she was a substitute goalkeeper behind Stephanie Wartosch-Kürten and was used in two games. A year later, she took part in the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City because other goalkeepers were injured. Here, too, she came up with two appearances in which she conceded nine goals. Until 2005 Thyßen played for the national team and wanted to recommend himself for the following Olympic Games, but did not make it into the squad. Thyßen completed a total of 71 international matches.
