OPEN ARCHIVE is an open source - software for digital long-term archiving , which the company Grau Data GmbH in Schwabisch Gmund has been developed.

Grau Data is a member of the Open Source Business Alliance , the OPENARCHIVE is the archiving component of the Open Source Reference Stack.

function

OPENARCHIVE is implemented internally in the form of a hierarchical storage management . For this purpose, the file systems of Linux and Windows were provided with a filter interface. Files that conform to an adjustable policy (file date, file size, file type) are automatically transferred to an external hard disk system or tape drive. A so-called stub file remains in the file system . If the swapped-out file is accessed again, it is copied back to the corresponding location in the file system. Multiple versions of a file can be archived if desired.

NFS or CIFS is normally used as an external interface . Since the respective native file systems and their APIs are used, the metadata ( ACLs , Extended Attributes) can also be archived in an audit-proof manner.

In order to guarantee the permanent availability of the data, multiple copies of the data can be made. In the event of a disaster, the complete archive can be restored from the data copies (hard drives, tapes).

The administration of the OPENARCHIVE is done via a command line tool or a graphical user interface that was developed in Qt . Parts of the functionalities can also be controlled via APIs.

The commercial version of the OPENARCHIVE is the Grau Archive Manager . This has a certified WORM functionality that creates audit-proof archive media from normal hard drives and tapes.

Fields of application

Today, OPENARCHIVE is used in various medium-sized companies and in a scientific environment. The Federal Archives have also been using this technology for a number of years. The Max Planck Society uses the technology as a replacement for SAM-FS .
