OS / 2 subsystem

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The OS / 2 subsystem , along with the Win32 and POSIX subsystems, is one of the subsystems provided in Windows NT . It is represented by the service file os2srv.exe .

The OS / 2 subsystem only supported command line-based OS / 2 1.x programs and was also only available in the x86 version of Windows NT; the RISC versions did not have the OS / 2 subsystem. The OS / 2 subsystem was binary compatible with OS / 2 programs, which means that OS / 2 programs did not have to be recompiled. In addition, the Windows NT add-on subsystem for presentation managers was also available separately from Microsoft, which also supported graphical OS / 2 programs.

The OS / 2 subsystem was preserved until Windows 2000 and was removed with Windows XP. Instead, Microsoft recommends the use of virtualization software such as Microsoft Virtual PC .
