POSIX subsystem

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The POSIX subsystem is adjacent to the Win32 - and OS / 2 subsystem is one of three subsystems , which in Windows NT were provided. It supports POSIX compatible programs and is represented by the service file psxss.exe .

Windows NT implemented the POSIX subsystem primarily to win orders from the US government because they required POSIX compatibility in Federal Information Processing Standard 151-2. Only the first version of POSIX.1 is implemented - this results in a number of restrictions, for example POSIX programs under Windows NT are neither network nor graphics-capable.

Although it has never been updated since its original implementation in 1993, the POSIX subsystem was retained until Windows 2000 and was only removed with Windows XP or Windows Server 2003. Microsoft developed Microsoft Windows Services for UNIX as a replacement .
