The weekly O Legionário was the official organ of the Archdiocese of São Paulo from 1929 to 1956 and the most important mouthpiece of the Brazilian Catholic Electoral League (1933-1934 and 1945).

History and work

The Legionário was originally a parish gazette and at the same time a newsletter of the Marian Congregation of Santa Cecilia . With the strengthening of the Marian Congregations and the cooperation of well-known personalities of the then very strong Catholic movement, especially through the cooperation of Plinio Corrêa de Oliveira (editor-in-chief from 1935 to 1947), the paper experienced an appreciation and improved both quality and circulation increase significantly. In 1930 the paper became the official organ of the Archdiocese of São Paulo. The Legionario became an important mouthpiece for the Catholic Electoral League in 1933, as it regularly reported and commented on the meetings. After the sessions of the Constituent Assembly, the Legionário continued to follow national and international events from the Catholic perspective. In the mid-1940s, the influence and importance declined. In 1956 the Legionário was discontinued. Since then, the “O São Paulo” has been the organ of the archdiocese.
