Obelos

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Obelos ( Greek  ὀβελός , actually "skewer" or "roasting spit") is a text-critical sign in ancient, especially Alexandrian philology, used to mark passages that are considered spurious or corrupt, mainly in poetic texts, in the form of a horizontal line on the left edge of the text. Its introduction, especially in the criticism of Homer , is attributed to Zenodotus of Ephesus . Together with the asterisk , the obelos marked a repeated verse believed to be interpolated ( versus iteratus ).
