The Oberaussemer Mühle is a brick tower Dutchman in Oberaussem .

history

Construction year

The year of construction of the Oberaussem windmill was unclear for a long time. It was long assumed that the mill was built in 1813. The reason for this assumption is an inscription above the main gate:

"God guard against all dangers who trust in him. JW Baumann had this mill built. In 1813, Gabr. Stark" .

Based on the number given here, the 200th anniversary was celebrated in 2013. The year of construction is more likely, however, since the main teacher Josef Dürbaum already mentioned this year as the year of construction in his village chronicle published in 1912. While researching in 2013, a local historian came across an official gazette dated December 22, 1845, in which the Paffendorf mayor made the construction plans of the miller Baumann public. Thus, the year of construction assumed so far seems to be wrong, rather it could be the year of birth of the builder.

Decommissioning

After 60 years of operation, the windmill was taken out of service in 1906 and replaced by a more modern, motor-driven mill. The old and new miller was the farmer Peter Wintz, owner of part of the Abtshof , who built the new mill in the immediate vicinity of his house on Bergheimer Strasse.
After the shutdown, the old mill was left to decay. During the Second World War it was used as a target for low-flying fighter planes, after the war it finally fell into ruin. To protect the youth who used the ruin as a playground, the last remnants of the interior fittings and the wings were dismantled in the early 1960s, the roof was renewed and all openings were bricked up.

restoration

Since 2005 the mill has been restored by the Oberaußem district forum . The old window and door openings were reopened, and extensive modernization work was carried out inside. It was planned to use it as an event location, as a warehouse for the district forum and for private purposes. The Mühlenverein Oberaussem eV takes care of their preservation
