from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Obergasse is one of the most historic streets in Idstein in Taunus . It begins in the north at König-Adolf-Platz and runs south, where it ends after about 270 meters and is continued on Seelbacher Straße .

history

The oldest house in Idstein was built around 1410.

The Obergasse 2 building, erected around 1410, is Idstein's oldest residential building and is even older than the archway building, which was built in 1497 and connects König-Adolf-Platz with Idstein Castle .

In the heyday of the city around 1600, many complex new buildings were built on Obergasse, König-Adolf-Platz and Himmelsgasse; For example, in 1595 the house at Obergasse 1, in 1596 the house number 14, in 1598 the inn "Zum Schwan" under number 5 and in 1599 the "Kalmenhof" under number 31. The building under number 24 also dates from the 16th century At the beginning of the 17th century today's numbers 13 (1604), 15 (also 1604) and 18 (1605) as well as 1612 the building number 16, the Grandpierre printing works , and in the 1620s the house Höerhof under number 26.

Immediately next to this building, the city wall was torn down in 1685 to make room for the first scheduled city expansion on the so-called "Weiherwiese". Around the same time (1689), the Obergasse grammar school was built under today's numbers 21 to 29 and existed until 1817.

Another striking building on this street is the "German House" built around 1750 at number 4.
