The König-Adolf-Platz is the central square of the city of Idstein im Taunus . It is surrounded by representative half-timbered houses .

Surname

The name was given in honor of the only German king from the house of Nassau , King Adolf (around 1250–1298).

The former Graf-Adolf-Platz was renamed Adolf-Hitler -Platz under the National Socialists and was given its current name in 1946.

history

Town hall (middle) and chancellery (archway building, right).

The König-Adolf-Platz was built in the 1930s after the town hall, which is located on its current northwest side, was pushed forward by a rock slide in 1928 and restored in 1932/33. In connection with these construction measures, the Walter and Ries houses to the south-east of the town hall were soon demolished, creating the space for the construction of König-Adolf-Platz. In 1937 the lion fountain by the Wiesbaden sculptor Carl Wilhelm Bierbrauer was installed on the newly designed square .

Originally, König-Adolf-Platz was open to car traffic before it was converted into a pedestrian zone in 1986.

location

On the north side of the square there is an archway that connects the old town via Schlossgasse with the castle and the Hexenturm , Idstein's landmark . Between the archway and the castle is the chancellery, built in 1497, which forms the historical dividing line between the urban area in the south and the stately district in the north.

Rodergasse runs to the west and Obergasse and Felix-Lahnstein-Strasse to the south . To the east, Himmelsgasse connects König-Adolf-Platz with the nearby market square.

building

The Taunushof was one of the original locations of the Elvis Presley film Café Europa .

Number 1 is the Gasthaus zum Löwen, which was built in 1590.

Number 2 is the town hall built as a bridge over a former main road (pedestrian zone since 1986), which was completed in 1698 and is located immediately west of the archway.

Immediately next to the town hall is the Leaning House , built in 1727 , which is mailed to Rodergasse, which adjoins the square to the west. After it was completely renovated between 1995 and 1997, it became part of the Idstein town hall.

Number 7 is the Killingerhaus , built in 1615 , which is considered one of the most beautiful half-timbered houses in Idstein. Today the building, which the city acquired in 1916, houses the tourist office and the city museum.

The Taunushof is located at number 15 on the corner of Felix-Lahnstein-Straße. The building, erected in 1607, can be seen in the Elvis Presley film Café Europa . In the corresponding film scene, some American soldiers come out of the archway and cross the eastern part of König-Adolf-Platz, only to get inside the house through the archway-like entrance of the Taunushof. The original shot was made with an Elvis double , while the subsequent interior shot was shot with the real Elvis in a Hollywood studio. In this scene Presley sings the songs GI Blues and Doin 'the best I can and plays the song Blue Suede Shoes, also recorded by Presley , from the jukebox .
