The colonel sergeant (in the 17th and 18th centuries Obrist sergeant ) was formerly the officer , who - as the sergeant in the company - the economic and garrison relationships of a regiment had to settle.

The Oberstwachtmeister was then replaced by the major . In many cases, however, it was still customary to address the major as "Herr Oberstwachtmeister".

Later, the Obristwachtmeister / Oberstwachtmeister changed into a regular rank, whose position was that of a deputy regimental commander and who could also be used as a regimental commander if he was suitably qualified or if necessary. B. Colonel Sergeant Khantz, who died in 1642 in the battle of Breitenfeld as commander of the Braida Cürassier regiment .
