Obinitsa

Obinitsa is a village ( Estonian küla ) in the southern Estonian district of Võru . It belongs to the rural community of Setomaa (until 2017 Meremäe ). Obinitsa has 210 inhabitants (as of 2006).

History and sights

Obinitsa belongs to the traditional settlement area of ​​the Setu people . The village was first mentioned in a document in 1763. Obinitsa became known to tourists mainly because of the extensive cave system from Piusa towards the Russian border. The bat reserve is under nature protection. Quarrying quartz sand started there in 1922 . In the 1930s, a narrow-gauge railway was laid out for industry .

In 1904 a school church was opened in Obinitsa. The village's primary school was on the ground floor and the church on the upper floor. The church tower and altar were destroyed by the Stalinist authorities in 1950 . The newer Orthodox Church of Obinitsa dates from 1952. The Obinitsa cemetery was laid out before the Christianization of Estonia , probably around the year 500. The oldest preserved graves date from the 13th century.

On 22 hectares in 1995 artificial lake Paisjärv large, with its clear water is since 1986 the monument Seto Lauluimä that the vocal tradition of setos recalls. The three meter high granite sculpture was made by the Estonian sculptors Elmar Taniloo and Endel Rebane . Memorial stones for famous folk singers of the region are placed around them. In 1995 a local museum was set up in Obinitsa.

The Estonian writer Ülle Kauksi lives in Obinitsa .
