The administrative unit was formed in 1944 from part of Karaganda Oblast . In 1997 the area lost its independence and was attached to Northern Kazakhstan . Part of the former Kökschetau area was added to the Aqmola area in 1999 . Thus the city of Kokshetau became the capital of the Aqmola region, whose former administrative center Nur-Sultan (until 2019 Astana) , also the capital of Kazakhstan, was spun off as a city of republican importance with a special status equivalent to an area.
