Occaneechee Band of the Saponi Nation

The Occaneechee Band of the Saponi Nation (also Occaneechi Band of Saponi Nation ) are a tribe of North American natives , by the Saponi and other indigenous peoples of the genetic family of Siouan languages descended and in the Piedmontregion the states of North Carolina and Virginia home are . The tribe mainly lives in Pleasant Grove Township in Alamance County , the tribal administration is based in Mebane , and support programs are developed there for the nearly 700 members of the tribe. They own around 10 hectares of land in the old "Texas" community of the township on which a tribal center will be set up, including a reconstructed Occaneechee village from around 1700, a museum, a farm made from logs from 1880, and meeting and course rooms.

The Occaneechee Saponi were recognized by the state of North Carolina in 2001.
