The Occoneechee State Park is a state park in the southern US state of Virginia . It is located in Mecklenburg County near the town of Clarksville and is accessible via US Highway 58 . The state park on the north bank of the John H. Kerr Reservoir has an area of ​​10.9 km² of which around 7.7 km² belong to a peninsula almost completely surrounded by the reservoir. In addition to various overnight accommodations, the park offers visitors 30 kilometers of hiking trails and three boat ramps.

The name of the state parks reminiscent of the Indian tribe of Occaneechi . They lived on a flooded island in the Roanoke River near today's park until the 17th century . They were attacked by a militia during Bacon's rebellion in 1676 and later had to leave their country.

In 1952 the John H. Kerr Dam was completed and the reservoir was created. The Virginia State Department of Conservation and Recreation opened the state park in 1968 on land leased from the United States Army Corps of Engineers .
