Occopirmus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Occopirmus ( Ockopirmus and the like) was the sky god of the ancient Prussians .

It appears sporadically in old Prussian lists of gods from 1530. The Sudauerbüchlein calls him "Ockopirmus the first god of heaven and stars", while Johannes Maletius describes him as god of heaven and earth ( Occopirnum deum coeli et terrae ). Sometimes he is equated in the lists with the Roman god Saturnus .

The name can be interpreted as Old Prussian "the very first", and is from apr. ucka "aller" and pirmas "first" put together. Possibly it is a form of the Baltic sky god Dievs .
