Occupy Nigeria is a series of protests against the end of oil subsidies by the government of Goodluck Jonathan on January 1, 2012 in Nigeria .

Although Nigeria is Africa's largest crude oil exporter, it relies on imports of refined motor gasoline from abroad. Around 2.4 million barrels of crude oil are exported every day . The national refineries have been neglected mainly due to the widespread corruption in the country. As a result, despite the large oil reserves, Nigeria cannot meet its own gasoline needs and has to import 70% to ensure the supply.

The petrol price more than doubled overnight. From 65 naira (~ € 0.30) per liter at the end of 2011 to at least 141 naira (~ € 0.70) on January 1, 2012.
