Oceanodroma hubbsi is a fossil species of bird from the genus of the wave runner ( Oceanodroma ). She lived in the middle and upper Miocene . The Art epithet honors the American ichthyologist Carl Leavitt Hubbs .

features

The type material includes a skull, vertebrae, a pelvis and a left leg. The size of Oceanodroma hubbsi is between that of the California wave walker ( Oceanodroma homochroa ) and that of the black wave walker ( Oceanodroma melania ). The leg bones are thicker than in the above species and the foot and thigh bones are relatively longer than in all other wave runner species. The skull length is 35.0 mm, the beak length 17.7 mm, the length of the femur 16.0 mm, the shin bone length 32.5 mm and the tarsal length 22.4 mm. The size ratio of the tibia to the femur is 2.03: 1, the size ratio of the tibia to the tarsal bone is 1.40: 1.

Location

The fossil material was excavated in 1950 in the Miocene shale of the Capistrano Formation along the cliff one mile south of Capistrano Beach in Orange County , California.
