Odilia Maria of Efferen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Odilia Maria Freiin von Efferen († March 3, 1684 in Bergheim ) was the daughter of Johann Dietrich von Efferen and Wilhelmine Gertrud von Metternich zu Zwiesel. Since July 26, 1649 she was the mistress of the glory of Stolberg and Stolberg Castle . Odilia Maria married Ferdinand Freiherr Raitz von Frentz zu Kendenich. After Ferdinand's death, she married Friedrich Wilhelm Caspar Freiherr von Schorlemer zu Overhagen.

Life

Odilia Maria insisted on marrying only a Spaniard. For this reason, her future husband Ferdinand appeared at the first meeting in Spanish clothing and speaking Spanish, which impressed Odilia very much. The wedding took place on October 6, 1648 in the St. Aposteln Church in Cologne .

The then Duke of Jülich, Wolfgang Wilhelm von Pfalz-Neuburg , gave Odilia Maria and Ferdinand the fief of the glory of Stolberg and the castle on July 27, 1649. However, the comparison with previous fiefdoms shows significant differences: The fiefdom was reduced to the mountain shelf, that is, income from mines and minerals was missing. In addition, the couple only received the fief after paying 1,000 Reichstalers.

Odilia Maria had 7 children, Ferdinand II, Odilia, Margareta Antonetta, Franz, Heinrich Adolf, Johann Sigismund and Franz Carl, who later became master of Stolberg Castle.

On March 28, 1654, the fief of Ferdinand and Odilia was reassigned by the new Duke of Jülich Philipp Wilhelm .

The economic strength of Stolberg grew due to the great fire of Aachen that broke out in 1656 and numerous copper masters moved from Aachen to Stolberg. Among them were the Schardinel and von Asten families, who built the Blankenberg copper yard in 1658, among other things .

Odilia Maria's husband Ferdinand Freiherr Raitz von Frentz zu Kendenich died on March 14, 1663. Since the children who were to take over the fiefdom were not yet of legal age, great-uncle Ferdinand Freiherr von Hövelich was appointed as guardian .
