Offen Hetero (English original title: Openly Straight ) is a youth novel from 2013 and the second book by the American author Bill Konigsberg . The coming-of-age story revolves around high school junior Rafe, who has been openly gay since eighth grade. When he moves to a private high school for boys in Massachusetts, he decides to keep his sexuality a secret from his new classmates. The German translation by Andreas Diesel was published by Bruno Gmünder Verlag in May 2014.

When Rafe moves to a private high school for all boys in Natick, he decides to hide the fact that he is gay in hopes of finding a new identity as just Rafe and not just "that gay boy". In an attempt to live a life without labels, Rafe is immediately consumed by the athletes for his football skills. Rafe enjoys being treated normally in the locker room. Rafe makes a best friend and potential boyfriend named Ben. But Ben is straight and has no idea that Rafe is gay.

Awards and nominations

The novel won the 2014 Sid Fleischman Award for Humor and was a finalist for the Amelia Elizabeth Walden Award . In 2014, it was also named YALSA's Best Fiction For Young Adult Fiction List; and the American Library Association Rainbow List; the Texas Library Association's Tayshas List (as a top ten title); and was nominated for the Georgia Peach Award.

In March 2016, Konigsberg published the sequel Honestly Ben , in which Ben appears as the protagonist. It received three excellent reviews; by Publisher's Weekly, Booklist, and School Library Journal. Both novels in the series were also released as audiobooks that month. A German translation of the sequel has not yet been published.
