Oion (Lokris)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Oion or Oeum ( Greek  Οἰόν ) was an ancient fortress in Lokris in central Greece . According to Strabo it was above Cynos and Opus and was destroyed by the earthquake in 426 BC. Chr. Completely destroyed.

William Gell located Oion on a hill about 110 m high, about 1.5 km west of Livanates and about 2 km east of the Monastery of Metamorphosis Sotiros . Here he found an oval fortification, which in the 19th century was called Palaiochora ( Greek Παλαιοαρα = old village ) by the locals . Gell suspected that the name Oion meant oval and was a nod to the shape of the fortification.

William Abbott Oldfather identified the fortification on Kastraki Hill with the ancient Oion. Today it is believed that Oion was on the 200 m high Kastri hill. On this hill, which is about 4.5 km southwest of Atalanti and about 1.5 km north of the Agios Anargyros monastery , there is an oval fortification about 280 m long and 200 m wide.
