The Okutataragi pumped storage power plant is a large pumped storage power plant in Asago in the Japanese prefecture of Hyōgo . With an installed capacity of 1932 megawatts , it is one of the largest pumped storage power plants in the world and the second largest in Japan . The facility is operated by Kansai Denryoku .
As with most pumped storage plants, the power plant uses two reservoirs at different heights, drains water and pumps it up as the demand for electricity rises and falls. Construction began in 1970 and was completed in 1974.
Kurokawa Reservoir
The Kurokawa Reservoir, the upper basin, has a capacity of 33.387 million m³, a catchment area of 1.09 km², a water surface of 5.2 km² and is dammed by the Kurokawa Dam.
The dam on the Ichikawa River measures 98 m in height, 325 m in length and is made of 3.65 million m³ of material. The dam has the geographic coordinates 35 ° 14 '15 "N, 134 ° 52' 52" E.
Tataragi reservoir
The Tataragi reservoir, the lower basin, has a capacity of 19.44 million m³, a catchment area of 1.05 km², a water surface of 13.4 km² and is dammed by the Tataragi dam.
The dam measures 64.5 m in height, 278 m in length and is made of 1.462 million m³ of material. It is at the coordinates 35 ° 14 '13 "N, 134 ° 49' 55" E.
