history

The exact construction date of Old Lachlan Castle is not known. While the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland dates the construction to the 15th century, Historic Scotland assumes it was built around 1450. The castle was the seat of a line of the MacLachlan clan . The clan was involved in the Jacobite uprisings of 1745 . The clan chief was killed in the Battle of Culloden . In the aftermath of the uprisings, a royal warship shelled Old Lachlan Castle in 1746. Although only minor damage was caused, the residents fled and abandoned the castle. From this point on, Old Lachlan Castle was no longer used regularly and fell into disrepair over the centuries. About 50 years later, the clan built the also listed Castle Lachlan as a replacement not far from the castle . In 2013, restoration work began on Old Lachlan Castle by the Lachlan Trust .
