An olecranon fracture is a fracture of the olecranon, i.e. the upper edge of the ulna on the forearm , where the tendon of the arm extensor ( triceps brachii muscle ) attaches.

Symptoms

It usually arises from direct trauma , i.e. a fall backwards or to the side with direct impact on the elbow . The arm can no longer be actively extended. The elbow is swollen and bloodshot. You can feel the broken piece of bone that is pulled up by the triceps tendon.

therapy

Olecranon fracture before and after surgery with tension band osteosynthesis

Therapy usually has to be performed surgically by means of simple tension belt osteosynthesis ; plate osteosynthesis is necessary for a comminuted fracture. The metal can be removed after at least eight weeks. Only if the fracture has not been displaced does not need to be operated on in children.
