Oliver J. Schmitz

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Oliver J. Schmitz (born February 26, 1968 in Jülich ) is a German chemist. Since 2012 he has been professor of analytical chemistry at the University of Duisburg-Essen .

biography

After training as a chemical laboratory assistant at Forschungszentrum Jülich, he obtained the technical college entrance qualification at the Mies-van-der-Rohe-Schule in Aachen in 1989. After taking up chemistry studies at the Bergische Universität Wuppertal , he completed his diploma thesis: “Synthesis and chromatographic determination of arylalkyl hydroperoxides”. He received a scholarship from the Friedrich Naumann Foundation and received his doctorate in 1997 with a dissertation on "Development of capillary electrophoretic methods for the analysis of fatty acid hydroperoxides" with Sigmar Gäb at the University of Wuppertal. In 1998 he worked at the Walther Straub Institute for Pharmacology and Toxicology at the Medical Faculty of the Ludwig Maximilians University Munich (LMU) in Munich. His area of work in Elmar Richter's group was the use of capillary electrophoresis to detect DNA damage caused by environmental pollutants. From 1999 to 2000 he developed a new method for the non-radioactive detection of DNA adducts of genotoxic substances using capillary electrophoresis at the German Cancer Research Center. He completed his habilitation in 2004 at the Bergische Universität Wuppertal (topic: development of a method for analyzing DNA adducts using capillary electrophoresis).

research

His main research interests are multidimensional chromatography , the development of new ion sources for mass spectrometers and their application to complex mixtures of substances. He was also involved in the development of a multi-dimensional separation method: with the aid of ion mobility spectrometry, he developed a coupling of two-dimensional liquid chromatography with high-resolution mass spectrometry. He also made significant contributions to the development of laser ionization at atmospheric pressure (APLI).
