Omar Darboe ran as a United Democratic Party (UDP) candidate in the 2017 parliamentary elections in the Upper Niumi constituency in the Kerewan Administrative Area . With 32.20% he was able to win the constituency before Pa Omar Sonko (GDC) for himself.

In November 2019, the UDP dismissed eight party members from their party who were representing in parliament. The informed parliament now classifies MPs, including Darboe, as independent MPs.
