Omnia mea mecum porto

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Omnia mea mecum porto “I carry all my possessions with me” is asaying attributedby Cicero to the Greek philosopher Bias von Priene . Bias von Priene, one of the seven wise men , is said to have made this statement on the run from his hometown: His real possession lies in his abilities and his character traits - and not in material things. This shows the influence of the Cynics on the teaching of the Stoa ; compare, for example, the views of Diogenes von Sinope on material property.

Seneca later attributes this saying to the philosopher Stilpon (also: Stilbon) after the destruction of his city Megara by Demetrios Poliorketes in the variant “Omnia mea mecum sunt”.

Another variant: "Sapiens omnia sua secum portat".
