Oocyst

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An oocyst (plural:. Oocysts; gr Oos , egg and kystis , bladder) is a microscopically visible development stage of Apicomplexa .

Depending on the type of sporulation, it contains a certain number of sporocysts , which in turn contain a certain number of sporozoites . In the case of the genus Eimeria , for example, these are 4 sporocysts, each containing 2 sporozoites. Oocysts of the genera Isospora or Toxoplasma contain sporocysts and sporozoites in the opposite ratio, i.e. 2 sporocysts with 4 sporozoites each. After the oocyst has matured, known as sporulation , the released sporozoites actively penetrate into nucleated host cells and multiply there.
