Open source film

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Open source films are films that are produced and published using open source methods. Their sources are freely available and the licenses used for the films and their source materials meet the requirements of the Open Source Initiative (OSI) for the degrees of freedom of open source works.

definition

An open source film is a film that meets the following conditions:

  1. The license of the film is approved for free cultural works. This applies in particular to the Creative Commons licenses by and by-sa .
  2. The materials (sources) used in the film are also available under a license approved for free cultural works.
  3. The film and its sources can be obtained publicly via an online download or other means that are either free of charge or whose costs correspond to the costs of reproduction and distribution.
  4. The sources must be fully viewable and editable with free / open source software. If this is not the case, it must be ensured that they can be converted into such a format using free / open source software. The same must be true of the film itself.
  5. It should be possible to remount or reproduce the film from the sources.

The definition is based on the definition of open source software by the Open Source Initiative and the definition of free cultural licenses. Films that do not meet these criteria are either not open source or only partially open source.
