Tears of Steel is a science fiction - short film with a large share of CGI . The working name of the film project was Mango . This project was produced by the Blender Foundation and serves the further development and testing of free software , in particular the 3D graphics software Blender . The film was published on September 26, 2012 on the project homepage and on Youtube under the free Creative Commons Attribution license.
The film is set in the distant future near the Oude Kerk in Amsterdam . A group of fighters and scientists try to save the world from destructive robots.
The scenes in the film are almost exclusively computer generated. The actors were inserted into the environment using chroma keying and rotoscopy and modified using tracking. Mango's main technical goal was to integrate and test camera and motion tracking, as well as photo-realistic rendering . Furthermore, the compositing , the handling of masks (masking) and the color correction (grading) have been expanded and improved.
