Yo Frankie (proper spelling: Yo Frankie , working title: Apricot ) is a free 3D - Jump 'n' Run - Computer game that using free software , especially the graphics software Blender was made.

The game was published under the GNU GPL , the media files used under the Creative Commons naming license. The main aim of the project was to improve and demonstrate the suitability of the open source programs used for game development.

After Elephants Dream and Big Buck Bunny , two computer-animated short films, it is the third project of the Blender Institute .

Development history

On February 1, 2008, a team of six began working on Yo Frankie. This was based on the theme of the film Big Buck Bunny , from which the playable character, the flying squirrel Frank, was taken.

The game is offered in two versions: One uses the 3D game engine Crystal Space , the other the Blender Game Engine to display the game world. Even if both use the same media data, the game mechanics differ in some points. Both versions use Blender for modeling and animation of the levels and characters and Python as the scripting language.

During the development of the game, the software used was further adapted to the needs of the developers. The user interface of Blender was revised in several places and the animation and shading capabilities of Crystal Space were expanded.

In several places there was cooperation with the online community , for example they helped with the animation of the characters and voted on the name of the game.

The game has been sold on DVD since November 15th and has been available for free download on the project's website since December 9th. The published levels represent the first episode called A Furry Vendetta ; The developers are asking to create new episodes based on the media files and programs used. Three levels created by the community and other improvements have been integrated into version 1.1 of the game.

Game content

The player steers Frank through meadows and forest landscapes and hunts sheep and other animals, whereby he has to be careful of opponents. There is the possibility of collecting items with different effects, and Frank also has special abilities such as gliding or throwing bones.

The game supports a two-player mode with a split screen , in which case one player takes on the role of the monkey "Momo".
