openHPI is a web-based platform for e-learning on which free and freely accessible Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) on topics from the field of information technology are offered. openHPI is developed and operated by the Hasso Plattner Institute for Digital Engineering (HPI) in Potsdam. The courses on openHPI follow a two- to six-week schedule. Within a course week, learners can access the course materials flexibly in terms of location and time, watch learning videos, answer questions about understanding in short self-tests and exchange ideas in the discussion forum. The performance is recorded in rated weekly homework and a final exam. Participants who achieve at least 50% of the total number of points will receive a certificate at the end of the course.

An app for Android mobile devices, iPhones or iPads enables learning on the go. The course contents are mostly adaptations from the curriculum of the face-to-face study at HPI, which are specially prepared and enriched for use in the online environment. The course language is German or English, depending on the course.

history

The platform started in 2012 and was a pioneer for the MOOC format in Germany. The first course offered was on "In-Memory Data Management" and was offered by the founder of the HPI, Hasso Plattner . In 2017, five years after the platform was launched, openHPI recorded 400,000 course participants. The course topics include the following areas:

  • In-memory data management
  • Internetworking with TCP / IP
  • Internet security
  • Web technologies
  • Embedded Smart Home
  • Semantic Web Technologies
  • Data management with SQL
  • Business Process Modeling and Analysis
  • Object-oriented programming in Java
  • Linux for everyone

Technical aspects

The openHPI platform was initially based on the widespread Learning Management System (LMS) Canvas , using a revised front-end and further adjustments. Experience with the first courses showed, however, that such a technical core is not very suitable for scaling a learning environment for potentially tens of thousands of course participants. For this reason, a completely new platform in the sense of a service-oriented architecture (SOA) was developed, which allows better scalability and flexibility with regard to the integration of further features. The streaming of the course videos takes place in the background via the provider Vimeo. The video player integrated in the platform allows the synchronous playback of two video sources, e.g. B. the recording of a lecture together with the associated presentation slides. In 2015 the openHPI platform was expanded to include CodeOcean , a programming platform developed at the Hasso Plattner Institute that is available as an open source solution. They allow programming directly in the browser. It was used, among other things, in the openHPI courses “Java for Beginners”, “Web Technologies” and “Learning to program by playing”. Open Mode has been available on openHPI since 2017 , which makes it possible to watch some of the learning videos even without a user account. This is only necessary when learners want to perform certain actions, e.g. B. take an exam or post in the forum.

Partner platforms

In 2013, the Hasso Plattner Institute (HPI) made the first Enterprise MOOC platform openSAP available for SAP SE , on which employees, customers and the general public can receive further training on various topics. In 2015, mooc.house, a white label platform, was added to the HPI platform family, which allows companies, institutions and private individuals to offer online courses themselves. The National Academy of Engineering Sciences (acatech) uses mooc.house, for example, to create awareness for topics such as Industry 4.0 or machine learning. The World Health Organization (WHO) has been using another instance of the HPI platform since 2017 : With the OpenWHO knowledge platform, WHO trains its own employees and volunteers in the event of an epidemic and provides them with important information for work in crisis areas.
