The website or portal was launched in 1999 and initially only offered a limited selection of restaurants in San Francisco. OpenTable has more than 37,000 restaurant customers and has placed more than 760 million diners around the world since its inception. The OpenTable service is available in the USA, Canada, Germany, Japan, Mexico and the UK. OpenTable also operates TopTable.com, a leading UK restaurant reservation site.

In May 2009 the company went public on the NASDAQ stock exchange under the IPO name "OPEN". On October 1, 2010, OpenTable acquired Toptable, a UK-based restaurant reservation service.

In June 2014, The Priceline Group (now Booking Holdings Inc.), which also includes travel websites Booking.com, Kayak.de and SwooDoo.com, acquired OpenTable for $ 2.6 billion.

service

OpenTable's reservation service helps restaurants take reservations and fill more tables. In addition, restaurants can use OpenTable's electronic reservation book to completely replace the paper reservation book. The system modernizes reservation and guest management and allows restaurants to build up a detailed guest database, ie to achieve higher guest recognition and to operate targeted e-mail marketing. For restaurants that tend to work less with reservations, OpenTable offers the OT-Connect product. A web-based service that still allows restaurants to accept online reservations.

For restaurant patrons, hotel concierges and administrative staff, the website provides a method of finding tables available for a specific time that match the desired criteria such as cuisine, price range and location. Guests can also make reservations through apps for most smartphone operating systems.

The equipment includes:

  • Hardware - touch screen monitor, server, keyboard

  • Guest management - optimal guest recognition, preferences of guests and regular guests; also enables targeted marketing .
  • Table management - assists restaurant staff in assigning and placing tables; Inventory based; Recognition of all variants of table combinations.
