Orchard Road
The Orchard Road is the most famous shopping street in Singapore . At the southern end of the street is the Istana , the official residence of the President of Singapore.
The first store on Orchard Road was the Tangs, which was founded in 1934 and the first store on Orchard Road opened in the 1950s. There are also many well-known restaurants, cafes, nightclubs and hotels on Orchard Road.

Orchard Road got its name from the fact that nutmeg trees , Szechuan pepper and orchard grew on both sides of the road. The road developed in the 20th century.
Flooding occurred on June 16, 2010 after 100mm of rain at the intersection with Scotts Road. This was the worst flood since 1984. Shopping malls along Orchard Road such as Lucky Plaza and Liat Towers were affected by the flood. Many underground garages were under water and then had to be pumped out by the fire brigade. Nobody was injured.
