The Ordensburg Kirchholm ( Latvian Salaspils viduslaiku pils , Latin castrum Holme ) was an Ordensburg of the Livonian Order , near Riga .

history

The name of the castle comes from the bishopric's Holme castle, which was destroyed in 1298 and was located on the Dune island of Martinsholm. Heinrich's Livonian Chronicle mentions a castle on an island ( Holme ).

The Livonian Order built a new stone castle on the right bank of the Daugava with the St. George's Church, first mentioned in 1380. A Vogt of Neu-Kirchholm Castle is mentioned in 1423 and 1485 and a Drost in 1543. In 1452, a treaty between the order and the bishop about rule over Riga was signed at the castle.

Troops from Riga burned the castle down in 1577 to prevent it from falling into the hands of Russian troops.

Description of the castle

The castle was built from ashlars about 10 m high on the right, high bank of the Daugava. It was a 40 × 40 m square building with a 17 × 19 meter courtyard. The outer bailey extended up the Daugava. The entrance was over a retractable bridge on the west side. In preparation for the war with Moscow, the castle was built around the 15th and 16th centuries. Turn of the century with two new towers in the northwest. Due to the damming of the Daugava, the remains of the ruins are now flooded by the water level.
