Udo Arnold

Udo Arnold (born September 6, 1940 in Leitmeritz , Reichsgau Sudetenland ) is a German historian and university professor who specializes in the history of the Teutonic Order .

Life

The son of a teacher couple Arnold came after the expulsion of Germans from Czechoslovakia into the Bergisch land . After graduating from high school in Bergneustadt , he studied history, Eastern European history , German , musicology , philosophy , pedagogy , art history and law at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn . From 1966 he worked at the historical seminar on a research project on the regional history of Prussia and the history of the Teutonic Order. 1967 magna cum laude to Dr. phil. after receiving his doctorate , he headed the Teutonic Order Central Archive in Vienna from 1968 .

He returned to Bonn in 1970 and completed his habilitation in 1975 at the Seminar for History, History Didactics and Political Education at the Rhineland University of Education . Appointed associate professor in 1978 , he held the chair for Medieval Studies at the University of Hanover until 1980 . From 1986 he headed the project division East German State History at the University of Bonn. In 1992 he received a visiting professorship at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń , to which he remained connected as an Erasmus officer . Since 1992 alternating, since 1997 alone he has been managing director of his Bonn seminar. In 2005 he retired and was entrusted with the voluntary continuation of the seminar leadership.

Recognizing that European history cannot be national, Arnold dedicated himself since 1965 to the 800-year history of the Teutonic Order; because its spiritual and political influence reached from the Holy Land to the Baltic States and Western Europe . With foreign authors and collaborators, Arnold made these connections clear at conferences in Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, Austria, Poland and Russia. From 1974 to 1995 he headed the Historical Commission for East and West Prussian State Research .

Arnold lives in Bad Münstereifel .
