Principles of order and description for the state archives of the German Democratic Republic

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The elaboration and introduction of the principles of order and registration for the state archives of the GDR (OVG) in 1964 was intended to create a uniform, scientifically sound basis for all archive work in the GDR . Priority was given to the organization and indexing of the archives of the socialist epoch. At the same time it was demanded that the OVG be used for the content indexing of the archives of earlier eras. The top priority was that the finding aids created with the indexing of the content give the user the opportunity to “get to the sources they are looking for as quickly and reliably as possible”.

In more than 300 paragraphs, the responsibility and the structure of the archives were dealt with intensively. A large chapter also takes up the formation and the delimitation of archive holdings as well as the indexing of the content with the most important descriptions. In addition to the basic elaboration on the OVG, further supplements to pamphlets, maps and plans as well as photographic reproductions were published a few years later.

Today the OVG, together with international indexing standards, form the basis for new guidelines for indexing various types of archive material.
