Organization of American Historians
The Organization of American Historians (OAH) is a society of historians, teachers, and other persons and institutions who deal with American history in research and teaching. They are based in the historic Raintree House on the Indiana University campus in Bloomington .
The OAH has around 7,800 historians in the USA and from abroad as members (but also institutional members). It publishes the Journal of American History , awards a number of awards, and maintains a Distinguished Lectureship program. There is an annual general meeting in spring.
The OAH emerged from the Mississippi Valley Historical Association , founded in Lincoln in 1907 , which published the Mississippi Valley Historical Review every quarter from 1914 and initially dealt with the history of the Mississippi Valley area. In 1965 the OAH was formed because a majority of the members were too restrictive of the regional definition and liberal members opposed racial segregation in the American southern states, which also affected the members of the organization at meetings there. Accordingly, the journal was also renamed the Journal of American History . The seat of the magazine at Indiana University was chosen by the predecessor organization in 1963 (before it was at Tulane University ) and the OAH followed in 1970.
