An automatic document feeder or ADF ( English Automatic Document Feeder ) is an electromechanical device in copier , fax , scanning and multifunctional devices to automatically feed and process one or more pages with a laser or LED scanner.

term

The terms automatic document changer (AVW), automatic document feeder or document feeder (ADF) are umbrella terms for all types of automatic document feeders, through which the platen glass cover does not have to be opened and closed after each page, which is a significant time saving compared to manual scanning via the Placing the originals on the platen glass allows.

technology

There are different types of automatic document feeder:

  • ADF is the basic version of the Automatic Document Feeder ( english Automatic Document Feeder ) and pulls individual sheets from a stack of paper, leads them over the scanner and then throws them out again. Only the front side of a sheet is scanned in. This process is described by the technical term simplex .
  • ARDF (English Automatic Reverse Document Feeder) - / RADF (English Reverse Automatic Document Feeder) variants turn the sheet over again in the document feeder and guide it past the laser or LED scanning element again to scan the back. Since the back and front are scanned, the technical term for this is duplex or duplex ADF .
  • DADF (English Duplex Automatic Document Feeder) - / SPDF (English Single Pass Document Feeder) variants pull the documents through the scanner unit in one pass between two reading units - for the front and back. This eliminates the need to rotate the original, which means that the quality of the copy is higher - possible shifts in the image and text are excluded compared to a new feed as with ARDF / RADF models. This variant is also known as dual duplex or dual scan .

Note

The original capacity and the scanning performance of the individual models vary from model to model and manufacturer to manufacturer.

Since ADF can only be specified in general for devices with the extended RADF or DADF functionality, the exact properties of the automatic document feeder for each device should be read in the manufacturer's data sheet or technical manual.
