Orkut (own spelling: orkut ) was a social network that was mainly popular in Brazil . It should enable the user to make new acquaintances and maintain old ones. By providing as precise information about yourself as possible, users with the same interests in particular should be able to find each other. Orkut existed from 2004 to 2014.

history

Orkut was developed by Orkut Büyükkökten , an employee of Google Inc. , in the 20 percent of his working time that Google employees were then free to use. The project was put into operation on January 22nd, 2004 - shortly before Facebook - and maintained by Google.

After most users initially came from the USA (over 60% in February 2004), Orkut spread quickly , especially in Brazil . At the end of June 2004, the percentage of Orkut users from Brazil had already exceeded the percentage from the USA. As a result, the number of users for Brazil continued to rise and the percentage of users from the US continued to decline. As of January 30, 2006, 72.91% of users were from Brazil. Orkut remained little common in the United States and Europe .

In 2008, Google transferred Orkut operations to its Brazilian subsidiary with offices in São Paulo and Belo Horizonte . Of the 60 million Orkut users at the time, 53.94% said they were Brazilian. In second place followed the users from India with 17.06%, in third place the USA with 15.13%. With the exception of Pakistan (1.19%), the proportion of users from other countries was below one percent.

In Iran , access to Orkut was blocked by the Iranian government in early 2005.

Following the announcement on June 30, 2014, Orkut was closed on September 30, 2014. Previous users could export their data via Google Takeout , creating new profiles was no longer possible from June 30th. Orkut Büyükkökten founded a new social network called hello as a follow-up project after the shutdown of Orkut . This is no longer operated by Google, but by Hello Network, Inc.

Connection with Google+

Since the start of Google+ , it has been possible to activate data exchange with Google+ in the profile settings. Posts posted in Orkut ended up on Google+ and vice versa. In addition, popular posts from Google+ could be displayed in Orkut and games made available on Google+ could be played. In addition, the Google+ profile information was displayed on Orkut.

criticism

There are concerns that virtual social network providers such as Orkut may collect large amounts of data and link it with data from other services (such as Gmail in this case ). Google states that it will not pass on the data in Orkut (this does not include judicial orders) or that it will be resold.
