Places of repression

Places of Repression is an internet portal that gives an overview of the most important places of communist oppression in the Soviet Occupation Zone (SBZ) and the GDR . It brings together 45 historical places, memorials and museums.

In terms of time, the portal covers the Soviet occupation zone, i.e. the period from 1945 to 1949, and the German Democratic Republic, i.e. the period from 1949 to 1990.

The offer was activated on November 15, 2011. It was initiated by Bernd Neumann , the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media , and financed by his authority with 90,000 euros. It offers links to Soviet special camps , most of which were set up at the sites of National Socialist concentration camps or prisoner of war camps , remand prisons of the Ministry for State Security , execution sites and important German-German border locations such as the so-called Tränenpalast , Checkpoint Charlie and Eichsfeld .

The project was developed by the House of History Foundation of the Federal Republic of Germany. It is used for school education and adult education and brings the user closer to what is happening through photos and interviews with contemporary witnesses . There is background information, links to the websites, information on opening times and a detailed list of literature.
