Orthodox Union
The Orthodox Union (OU) is an umbrella organization for Orthodox Jewish communities and organizations in the USA . The Union, based in New York City, was founded in 1898 by Rabbi Henry Pereira Mendes (1852-1937). Her field of activity today encompasses many areas of religious Jewish life.
The Orthodox Union is particularly well known for its oversight in the area of food production. The Hechscher awarded by her , with which the food produced under her supervision is marked as kosher, as in accordance with the Jewish dietary laws , is widely recognized worldwide. The activities of the OU also extend into the areas of education , sport and more.
