Ortiz (city)

Ortiz is the capital of the Ortiz district of the same name in the northwest of the Guárico state in Venezuela . The place had about 8459 inhabitants in 2010.

Ortiz emerged as a settlement of Spanish ranchers, mostly from the Basque Country, during the seventeenth century. Ortiz was twice the capital of Guáricos .

Ortiz is a main theme in the novel Casas Muertas by Miguel Otero Silva .

Ortiz is connected to the rest of the country by National Road 2. This road leads north via Parapara and Flores to San Juan de los Morros . In a southerly direction, the national road leads to Calabozo, 90 km away .
