Osman Nuri

Osman Nuri Pascha (* 1839 in Istanbul ; † 1906 ibid) was a general and painter during the Ottoman Empire .

Life

Nuri entered the Mektebi-i Harbiye Military Academy in 1853 . In 1857 he got a job as a court painter in the Sultan's palace. In this job he made it to the rank of general. He participated as a military leader in the war against Russia in 1877. His activities also included teaching art at the military schools Mektebi-i Harbiye and Kuleli . Nuri was one of the teachers of the painter Hoca Ali Rıza (1858–1930).

Sinking of the frigate Ertuğrul

Nuri was one of the first Turkish Western-style painters to use oil paints in his pictures. His pictures mostly dealt with the theme of the sea. Whereby in his pictures, which often depicted sea battles and warships, his military background is clearly reflected. His better-known works include the sinking of the Ertuğrul in Tokyo Bay and the Battle of Preveze . Most of his paintings now hang in the Istanbul Maritime Museum and the Istanbul Military Museum.
