The Osmaniya script

The Osmaniya script (also Osmanija , Osmanya or Ciismaniya ) is a writing system that was developed for the Somali language between 1920 and 1922 by Osman Yuusuf Keenadiid - the brother of the Sultan of Hobyo .

history

It was one of several attempts to write Somali in writing, and there were also various approaches based on Latin or Arabic . Osmaniya is one of the few alphabets that is not based on another, established script.

After Somalia gained independence , Osmaniya became an official script in 1961, as did the Latin alphabet. After the decision was made to use the Latin alphabet for the standardization and writing of Somali in 1972, the importance and use of Osmaniya fell significantly.
