history

Garden side of the first hospital Palazzo Lucatelli near the port

The first verifiable nursing care in Trapani dates back to the time of the Crusades , when visitors to the Holy Land fell ill on their way there or back and were unable to continue their journey. Ships in the port of Trapani released the pilgrims of the long journey, who were marked by their hardships or illness. There were compassionate citizens in a house near the Church of San Pietro who worked to protect the sick. In the course of time, other houses were added in the vicinity through foundations, so that a small hospital and the small church of Sant'Antonio , the patron saint of seafarers, were soon built there . A document from King Martin the Humane , dated June 19, 1399, shows that it was attached to the Great Hospital of Vienna (AKH Wien) and was under the jurisdiction of the abbot General Director of the Order of San Antonio. Hospital administration was entrusted to a delegation of three noble rectors appointed annually by the city's Senate.

Towards the end of the 14th century, the Trapani naval consul bought a piece of land from the Jew Macalufo de Saya for 3 ounces of money that had yielded candle wax during processions. Around 1455 the idea of building a new, larger hospital came up. The new building was erected near the Church of St. Agostino , where the Palazzo Lucatelli now stands. In 1569 the Compagnia di Sant'Antonio Abate was founded, which undertook to serve as a free hospital for the sick and as a place of death. The Senate then left the Church of Sant'Antonio to the Society.

Old hospital

Twenty years later, in 1589, it is recorded in the city's chronicles that on behalf of the Viceroy Count of Albadalista, the monks' administration of the hospital was returned to the city. The chronicler Benfratelli reported: “But I have seen how they hurt the sick, how worn the furniture was, how dilapidated and neglected the maintenance of the premises. Eight years later, they were forced to flee the city at night in order to avoid any possible prosecution that threatened them. ”The hospital then returned to the Compagnia di S. Antonio .

In 1628, Lazarro Locadello (or Lucatelli), one of the directors of the hospital administration, left a legacy of 3,000 ounces which was initially used to renovate the facade. As a thank you and in memory of the generous donation, a stone bust of the donor was erected in a niche in accordance with the testamentary provisions. Later, various architects and clients made further renovations inside the building. Among the architects who worked inside the building was the famous Giovanni Biagio Amico , who shaped the late Baroque period in Sicily. In the 17th century the clinic became the location of an academy for medicine, established and directed by the semiologist Giuseppe Cottone . It became one of the most famous clinics for medical practice on the island of Sicily in the 18th century. Renowned doctors and surgeons Rocco Solina , Ignazio Lampiasi and Antonino Turretta were part of the medical staff .

Building

The building that is in operation today dates from the 1960s. In 1968, the previous building on Piazza Lucatelli was closed, the location where the region's health services had been based for over 500 years. While the departments were housed in individual, small buildings in a park-like area at the old location, emphasis was placed on having everything as centralized and close together as possible in the new building. The result was a two-aisled, massive, 10-story central building with several side axes that only have three or four floors.
