The Osservatorio Astronomico di Roma ( OAR ; German Astronomical Observatory Rome ) is an astronomical observatory in Rome , Italy and belongs to the Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica . It has two locations, on Monte Mario ( 41 ° 55 ′ 20.9 ″  N , 12 ° 27 ′ 8.9 ″  E ), which houses the INAF, in Monte Porzio Catone ( 41 ° 48 ′ 42.7 ″  N , 12 ° 42 ′ 19.2 ″  E ), 30 km east of Rome.

There used to be an observatory on the Capitol (Rome) , which was destroyed by fire in 1958. As early as 1922 it was decided to move from Rome to Monte Mario, where the observatory was opened in 1938, because of light pollution and other disturbances. The observatory on Monte Porzio Catone was opened in 1985 and houses a museum with historical instruments and a library with 15,000 volumes.

In addition to the state observatories, there was also the Vatican Observatory in Rome , which also moved from Rome to Castel Gandolfo because of light pollution.
