The east beacon on Wangerooge (also: Strandbake , Stundenglasbake or Eieruhr ) was a cardinal sea mark established in its original form in 1909 . The beacon , together with the lighthouse and the north beacon, was the symbol of the island of Wangerooge .

history

The original beacon from 1865 was in a different location. It was moved several times, the last time in 1907. The substructure was added later. The beacon was finally built in its last form in 1909 as a purely wooden structure, together with an accommodation barrack for hydraulic engineering workers. The official name of the sea mark was West Cardinal Top Mark . Since it was reminiscent of an hourglass (hourglass), the name hourglass beacon has become common. The barrack was demolished in 1990, but the shipping mark continued to be used. In 1999 it was placed under monument protection (see list of architectural monuments in Wangerooge ).

demolition

The building inspection in 2012 by the Wilhelmshaven Waterways and Shipping Authority showed that the beacon “is no longer worthy of renovation”. A renovation would require the demolition of the beacon with a subsequent new construction. The WSA estimated the cost of this at 120,000 euros. The office stated: "These costs are not justified, since the shipping mark will no longer be needed in the future."

The dismantling should be carried out at the beginning of 2013 and an information board should then be erected to remind of the east beacon. The dismantling was agreed with the monument protection authority.

The islanders of Wangerooges then founded the citizens' initiative "Save the Ostbake" in 2013 to preserve the landmark. The mayor negotiated with the WSA that the beacon will be removed down to the support posts, but that a replica of the first beacon may be built on the site. In order to raise the amount of 50,000 euros for the replica, the island community is looking for sponsors.

On June 13, 2013, the historic navigation mark was demolished with an excavator at low tide. The demolition showed that the support piles were also dilapidated and broke off. After the original plan was to leave the support posts for a replica of the beacon, they have now been removed; a replica is therefore questionable.
