Easter flatbread from Bavaria

The Easter flatbread is a pastry that is traditionally served on the Easter holidays for breakfast and / or for afternoon tea. The most common are sweet recipes, mostly made from yeast dough with raisins and almonds . There are both Protestant and Catholic traditions in which the flatbread is consecrated before it is eaten. The Easter flatbread is a variant of Easter bread .

In the meantime, Easter flatbreads are already being offered in stores well before Easter, with sales focusing on the two weeks before Easter. In Switzerland, especially in Basel, there is its own tradition of Easter flatbreads, which differs from the German variants and does not contain yeast.

Biblical background

The Easter flatbread is a Christian reminiscence of the matzo - the unleavened bread - of the Jewish festival of Passover . These are mentioned in the Passion and Easter reports of the Gospels ( Mt 26,17  LUT ; original Luther text: "on the first day of sweet bread") and interpreted spiritually by Paul ( 1 Cor 5: 6–8  LUT ). The last stanza of Martin Luther's Easter song Christ was in death bonds reads:

We eat and live w /
yn the right Easter flatbreads
The old sour dough should not
be by the word of grace
Christ wil the cost be /
and the soul will be alone /
the glawb wil keyns others live.
- Martin Luther: Christ lay yn death bound.
